Niall Quinn, Steve Bruce, SAFC Chief Executive Steve Walton and eight of the first team were present at the Premier League Places for Players event to congratulate the winners and present certificates to the outstanding participants.

Prizes were given out in 18 categories representing the programmes ran by SAFC Foundation.

Top Scorer has been running for over five years and is one of the most prestigious events held by SAFC Foundation.

Lesley Spuhler, SAFC Foundation CEO, said: “Top Scorer is a highlight in the Foundation’s calendar and to recognise the achievements of the course participants in a prestigious award ceremony is great. Top Scorer allows us to show the variety of work we carry out in the community and how we can change lives with our programmes.”

Guests were treated to lunch and drinks before the ceremony where awards in categories such as Improved Confidence, Positive Parenting and Increased Motivation were handed out.

Corporate members, donors, partners and programme funders of the charity attended the ceremony, with some accompanying players to the stage to present awards.

Niall Quinn, SAFC Chairman said: “Top Scorer is a real celebration of 2009’s achievements reflecting not only the hard work of those taking part in the programmes but the work of the SAFC Foundation staff too. Every winner has shown a determination to succeed. All are deserving of their awards.”

SAFC Foundation worked with 34,000 young people and their families in Sunderland and the surrounding area last year but relied on fundraising for 95 per cent of project costs.
