Steven Gerrard gave the Merseysiders the lead two minutes after the break. Glen Johnson’s attempted shot was well off target but dropped nicely into the path of Gerrard on the left side of the Birmingham box. The England midfielder had time to cut inside before unleashing a fierce shot across goal which flew into the far corner of the net.
However Liam Ridgewell equalised after 56 minutes. James McFadden was the creator with some neat trickery on the right flank before floating over a teasing cross which left Ridgewell with the simplest of tasks from close range.
