Wayne Rooney limped off with an ankle injury as Ivica Olic’s injury-time strike condemned United to defeat in the first-leg in Germany.

Rooney put the Red Devils in front after just 64 seconds.

But Bayern dominated after that and drew level when Rooney deflected Franck Ribery’s free-kick past Edwin van der Sar 14 minutes from time before an eventual finish that brought double agony for United.

Rooney must now be considered a doubt for the match with Chelsea on Saturday, although the extent of the injury has yet to be determined.

The injury will be assessed on Wednesday, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson saying he was hopeful it is not serious.
