The Community Trust’s Premier League 4 Sport project hosted a Premier League Places for Players badminton tournament for four local schools benefiting from expert coaching from Badminton England and Wigan Sports Development.

The aim of PL4Sport is to boost participation in four Olympic sports using the hook of the Wigan Athletic badge to attract new participants in badminton, judo, table tennis and volleyball.

The tournament received a visit from long serving Latics star Scharner and World Cup goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic. They doubled up to take on two lucky participants, Lucy Reid and Liam Hesketh, from Goldbourne High School, and narrowly beat the school children 11-7.

It appears though that the players might have overplayed the novice card because after the game Scharner admitted to playing badminton as a child. Smiling, he said: “I used to play badminton as a youngster in my back garden! This project is a great opportunity for young people to access Olympic sports.”

Wesley Partington the PL4Sport Co-ordinator said: “The project has only been established for five months but already has 16 clubs up and running, and has engaged and retained over 350 young participants so far.”
