Fulham remain very much in the hunt for a place in the Europa League final after shutting out Hamburg with a strong defensive display at the Hamburg Arena.

Jonathan Pitroipa’s second-half strike was well-saved by Mark Schwarzer, who, along with Brede Hangeland and Aaron Hughes, played well to keep a strong Hamburg side at bay.

Fulham rarely looked like grabbing a vital away goal but they will be content to return to Craven Cottage with a 0-0 draw ahead of next week’s second leg.

decent saves

Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie with Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

Diego Forlan gave Atletico an eighth-minute lead and the Spanish side came close to increasing their advantage in the second half, with Jose Reina making two decent saves and Forlan spurning a good opportunity.

Liverpool created few chances of note, with captain Steven Gerrard firing arguably their best opening into the side-netting in the first half.

“Fulham will be content to return to Craven Cottage with a 0-0 draw” .
