The 24-year-old failed to fire during England’s ill-fated World Cup campaign, sparking suggestions he may have been carrying an injury.
Rooney had endured a disrupted end to the Barclays Premier League season with ankle and groin injuries, and scored his last top-flight goal in the 2-1 win over Liverpool on 21st March.
And that poor form in front of goal appeared to follow Rooney to South Africa, where he failed to score in any of England’s four matches and looked far from at his best.

But Ferguson has been quick to quash rumours that the striker’s lack of success was due to a lack of fitness.
“There is nothing wrong with the lad or his fitness,” said Ferguson.
“He’s relaxing on holiday in Barbados and I expect him to come back refreshed for the new season.”
Rooney and Manchester United kick-off the new Barclays Premier League season against newly promoted Newcastle United at Old Trafford on 14th August.
