The England international sustained a minor problem in Saturday’s 1-0 friendly win over Ipswich Town and he was substituted as a precaution.

Former Arsenal and Birmingham City defender Upson is a key man for the Hammers, but Grant does not think the centre-back’s fitness is a major issue ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Southend and next Saturday’s visit of Deportivo La Coruna.

Grant told West Ham’s official website: of Upson: “I don’t think it is serious, but we don’t want to risk our players.

“I think he will be okay, but we need to see what the medical department say.”

Grant will be hoping Upson has shaken off any knocks when the Hammers kick off the new Barclays Premier League season away to Aston Villa on 14th August.
