Wayne Rooney netted his first England goal for a year as Fabio Capello’s side overcame 10-man Switzerland in their Euro 2012 qualifier in Basle.

The Manchester United striker ended an 11-match drought for his country after 10 minutes. But the goal came at a price with Arsenal’s Theo Walcott colliding with a defender and needed to be substituted.

Switzerland had Stephan Lichtsteiner sent off before Manchester City’s Adam Johnson made it 2-0. And, although Xherdan Shaqiri reduced the arrears, Sunderland’s Darren Bent wrapped up the points two minutes from time, his first goal in an England shirt.

Elsewhere, Barclays Premier League duo Kevin Doyle and Robbie Keane helped the Republic of Ireland to a 3-1 win at home to Andorra in qualifying Group B. Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Doyle added to Kevin Kilane’s opener before Tottenham Hotspur frontman Keane netted a third.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City’s Nikola Zigic found the back of the net for Serbia in his country’s 1-1 draw with Slovenia in qualifying Group C.
