Liverpool signed Argentina international Maxi Rodriguez on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid, while the Reds offloaded Andrea Dossena and Andrey Voronin to Napoli and Dinamo Moscow respectively.
Elsewhere, Birmingham City splashed out on Spanish midfielder Michel, and Sunderland brought in Matthew Kilgallon from Sheffield United.
