The Latics lie 15th in the Barclays Premier League, just two points clear of the relegation zone, after their 3-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur at the DW Stadium last Sunday.

Despite the loss, the manager was full of praise for the atmosphere created by the club’s supporters throughout the match, and expressed his belief that this kind of attitude will help the club progress up the table.

“In the second half against Spurs we began by showing a clear reaction to the situation and looked as though we wanted to get back in it,” he told the club’s official website.

“The crowd played a massive part in that, they got behind us and made a lot of noise.

“Results aren’t going our way lately, although we deserve more, and we need everyone pulling in the same direction to make sure the season ends well.”

Martinez must now focus his attention on Saturday’s forthcoming match at Birmingham City, where he will hope to see the right reaction from his side and has encouraged fans to show the same unity displayed in the defeat by Spurs.

“We need to learn from Sunday, get rid of that frustration and move on toward the Birmingham game,” he added.

“The key is to be united and to provide the support that allows our players to perform at their best.

“The fans are the biggest section of this club, and it’s a moment where we all need each other and once we get through it we’ll be able to go on to the next level.”
