The deal completes an astounding rise to prominence for a player who was in the non-league ranks with Maidstone United two years ago.
Smalling has caught the eye with some excellent performances in the Cottagers’ Europa League campaign this season and despite making only nine first-team appearances, Sir Alex Ferguson views the 20-year-old Londoner as having the talent to make a big impact on the game.

A United spokesperson told the club’s official website: ”Manchester United has agreed terms for the transfer of Chris Smalling from Fulham.
“Chris has agreed personal terms with the club and will join for the beginning of the 2010/2011 campaign. He will remain at Fulham until the end of the current season.”
Smalling made his debut appearance for the Cottagers on the final day of the 2008/09 season, as the team lost 2-0 to Everton. He made his first senior start in the 1-1 draw with CSKA Sofia in September.
After making his England Under-21 debut in November, the 20-year-old had to wait six weeks before making his first start in the Barclays Premier League, filling in for the injured Brede Hangeland in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, during which he scored an own goal.
A Fulham statement confirmed an agreement had been reached subject to a medical and final terms.
