Baker was presented with a special Barclays Merit Award, recognising his dedication and professionalism in looking after players and match officials at the Black Cats home fixtures.

George first joined Sunderland 51 years ago when the club was based at Roker Park, and has continued his sterling work since they relocated to The Stadium of Light in 1997.

His role includes ensuring the security of players in the tunnel areas as well as being responsible for the match officials. His warm and courteous manner has made him a favourite with home players and visitors alike.

truly wonderful

Baker said: “Sunderland is a truly wonderful club, I love working here and it has been a huge part of my life for over 50 years. I don’t feel I deserve such a prestigious honour but I am tremendously proud to have been given the Barclays Merit Award and it is something I will always cherish.”

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn added: “It is a hugely deserved award for someone who has shown tremendous dedication to football and to Sunderland.

“Everyone at the club is both proud and delighted for George, who has been and continues to be a fantastic servant to Sunderland. He’s a credit to the club and has a wonderful reputation amongst players and match officials. I’m delighted that Barclays have chosen to recognise him in this way.”

The award was presented to George on the pitch at The Stadium of Light before Sunderland’s Barclays Premier League fixture with Burnley on Saturday.
