City defender Kolo Toure was judged to have pushed Darren Bent in stoppage-time at the Stadium of Light and Bent scored the resulting spot-kick to secure the Black Cats’ first win of the campaign.
It was the first goal conceded by Roberto Mancini’s side in the new Barclays Premier League season and it was Sunderland’s first victory over City for 10 years.
The visitors had been frustrated in their attempts to snatch victory with striker Carlos Tevez missing the best chance on 16 minutes.
Sunderland lost striker Fraizer Campbell who was stretchered off in pain following a tangle of legs with Micah Richards just before half-time.
