The Blues left the European competition on Tuesday evening, after losing to former manager Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan, the earliest stage they have departed in four years.

Recent defeats to Everton and Manchester City have seen Carlo Ancelotti’s side slip to second place in the Barclays Premier League – two points behind leaders Manchester United.

The only other chance Ancelotti has of adding silverware to the club’s trophy cabinet is via the FA Cup, where they face Aston Villa in the semi-finals next month.

step up

Turnbull, who made only his third Chelsea appearance on Tuesday, is confident the Blues can complete a domestic double to make up for their European disappointment.

“I was pleased with my performance, that’s a positive but I’d much rather us be in the last eight,” said Turnbull, who joined the club on a free transfer from Middlesbrough last summer.

“We set out to win the game and go through but it wasn’t to be, we didn’t perform on the night. We have two other competitions we can still win though, and winning them has to be our aim.

“Every game now is a big one and we have to step up and do our stuff.”

stay patient

Chelsea could be five points behind the Red Devils by the time they face Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Sunday afternoon.

With first and second-choice goalkeepers Petr Cech and Hilario both back in light training after injury, Turnbull may miss out on making his third straight start.

He admits it will be hard to return to life out of the side, but says he made the right decision to leave Boro, where he had become the Cola Championship side’s number one.

“I will always work hard, but it does get frustrating when you train Monday to Friday and on Saturday you’re in the stands, it’s not easy wanting to get that chance, but I absolutely love it here,” the 25-year-old told Chelsea’s website.

“Training is fantastic every day, they’re all world-class players, but every professional wants to play, but equally as a professional you have to stay patient and focused.”
